ArcelorMittal Galati to supply steel plates for wind farm in Romania

Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:44:32 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal has announced that its Romanian unit ArcelorMittal Galati will supply 7,500 mt of steel plates for a new, 32-tower wind farm in Romania, which has the potential to generate the most megawatts of any wind farm in southeast Europe. The installation of the 80 MW farm will start in August.

According to ArcelorMittal's statement, many major wind farms across Europe have been built using ArcelorMittal steel. As SteelOrbis previously reported, ArcelorMittal Galati currently supplies heavy plates for wind turbines manufacturers in Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, India and Turkey, and intends to further expand its market and reach this year.

Wind turbines are made almost entirely of steel, including the tower which uses between 150 mt and 180 mt of quarto plate, or heavy plate. In addition to ArcelorMittal Galati, ArcelorMittal Asturias in Spain is also a major supplier of steel for the wind industry.
