BIR: Global scrap consumption decreases in H1

According to the October report of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) on global scrap consumption and trading data, in the January-June period of this year scrap consumption of leading scrap consuming countries decreased on year-on-year basis. In the given period, scrap consumption diminished by 7.2 percent in the EU-28 to 45.38 million mt, by 1.2 percent in China to 42.6 million mt, by one percent in Japan to 16.87 million mt, by 7.1 percent in South Korea to 14.1 million mt, by 2.8 percent in Russia to 8.02 million mt and by 2.1 percent in the US to 23.5 million mt, all year on year, whereas in the first half of this year scrap consumption in Turkey increased by 2.2 percent to 13.2 million mt on year-on-year basis. 

In the first half of this year, Turkey, the world’s leading scrap importer, imported 9.2 million mt of scrap with an 8.3 percent increase year on year, while India’s scrap imports rose by 19.1 percent compared to the same period of last year, with India continuing to be the second biggest scrap importer in the world. In the first half this year, scrap imports of South Korea (+1.4 percent), US (+6.5 percent), EU-28 (+1.3 percent), Canada (+68.2 percent) and Thailand (+7.6 percent) also showed rises on year-on-year basis.
