Canadian businessmen to meet with Mexican government

Amid strong criticism from Canadian politicians against the Mexican government, this week a group of Canadian businessmen will visit Mexico to meet with their local counterparts and the Mexican government, reported the powerful business group Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), which contributes 80 percent of Mexico's GDP.

"It is a significant step to strengthen trade relations between both nations, in an international context characterized by recent changes of leaders in North America," the CCE reported in a press release.

The delegation of CEOs from the Business Council of Canada will meet on January 15 with leaders of the Mexican private sector and key officials of the federal government, to consolidate cooperation in priority sectors such as financial services, investment, transportation, energy, automotive industry, manufacturing, aerospace, technology and agribusiness.

The businessmen's meeting takes place in a climate of tension in Mexico's trade relations with Canada. During the presidential term that ended in September (2018-September 2024), he generated friction with mining and energy companies.

In addition, other Canadian politicians accuse Mexico of being a springboard for Chinese products destined for the United States and Canada. Politicians are trying to expel Mexico from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
