China may cancel tax rebate on alloyed products

The new Chinese tax rebate policy on exports of certain steel products has caused many market players to think that Chinese exporters will probably tend to add boron or other alloys to rebars or wire rods in an effort to benefit from the tax rebates even more than ever.

Subsequently, rumors hit the market that the Chinese authorities would move to revise the export tax rebate applied to boron-alloyed hot rolled steel products. These reports refer specifically to wire rods, though rebar has also been mentioned.

This revision is reportedly going to consist of a cancellation of the existing tax rebates, if any, on exports of boron-added long products. The new implementation is said to be in force as of April 1, 2009; however, an official announcement is still being awaited.
