Brazil-based Gerdau Group announced this week that it has reactivated the construction of a structural profile plant in Mexico with an investment of US$1.1 billion, through its joint venture Gerdau Corsa.

"Most of the equipment has already been provided by the manufacturer and civil works are in progress. The annual production capacity is 1 million tons of steel and 700,000 tons of laminates," said the company.

The new plant is located in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo state, and should be operational in 2015 and represents the largest private investment ever made in the state.

Gerdau Corsa has been present in Mexico since 2007. It currently operates two production plants and a steel mil, plus three processing units for scrap collection, a plant of enabled rebar, and seven distribution centers in the country.
