South Korean steelmaker Hyundai Steel has announced that, together with domestic construction company Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C), it plans to create a low-carbon building model using carbon-reduced construction steel.

This way, the company intends to cut carbon emissions emitted by construction materials which are a major emissions source during the building construction phase. In order to achieve this goal, Hyundai Steel will utilize its own carbon-reduced rebars and shaped steel that are made with electric arc furnaces (EAF) using scrap as raw material.

In addition, the partners have also joined forces with South Korea-based Sampyo Cement to develop carbon-reduced cement, with its application on construction sites expected next year.

This method, which is currently used in the US and Europe, would result in reducing embodied emissions by about 30 percent compared to existing traditional buildings.
