The amendment on article No. 5 of the Italian Agriculture Decree Law that allows the signing of direct trade contracts between biomethane producers and companies that belong to hard-to-abate sectors has lately been approved by the Italian government. The news was positively welcomed by Federacciai, the Italian federation of steel companies, Assocarta, the Italian association of paper and cardboard, and by the CIB, the Italian Consortium of Biogas producers.

This action represents a further step towards the decarbonization of high-carbon sectors, and biomethane is certainly key to safeguard businesses both from a circularity and from a competitive point of view, Federacciai said.

“The energy mix is fundamental to achieving decarbonization goals. All measures favoring the use of alternative sources in industrial sectors, granting a secure and environmentally friendly energy supply are more than welcome. And biomethane is a valid alternative to reduce direct emissions (scope 1 emissions) of the steel industry,” said Antonio Gozzi, president of Federacciai.
