Katherine Tai asked to discuss steel triangulation with the new president of Mexico

US Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) sent a letter to Katherine Tai, US Trade Representative, and Jake Sullivan, Ambassador National Security Advisor, to meet with the cabinet of the president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss the issue of the alleged triangulation of Chinese steel to the United States from Mexico.

“In light of the recent presidential election in Mexico, I bring this ongoing matter to your attention again and urge you to address this with your counterparts in President elect Sheinbaum’s cabinet,” says the letter sent to Tai and Sullivan.

Earlier, Brown in a press conference of the Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill facilities, accompanied by leaders of the United Steelworkers, the congressman reiterated that the United States must apply Section 232 tariffs to Mexican steel imports at 25 percent, for a period of at least one year.

Brown, who is seeking re-election, said it does not matter who wins the US presidential election next November.

“No matter who is going to be the next president, Biden or Trump, when the review of the USMCA comes in 2026, we're going to drop the M [letter "m", for Mexico]. So USMCA will be called USCA,” he said.

He assured that Mexico violates the 2019 agreement to be exempt from the application of 232 tariffs. He also accused Mexico of violating the USMCA rules.
