Latin America’s total crude steel output up 0.5% in May from April

According to the data released by the Latin American steel association Alacero, in May this year total crude steel production in the region came to 4.93 million mt, up by 0.5 percent month on month and down by 9.9 percent year on year.

In the given month, Latin American long production amounted to 2.25 million mt compared to 2.40 million mt recorded in April, while its flat production was 2.07 million mt, declining by 30.3 percent month on month. In addition, in May seamless tube production rose to 140,500 mt compared to 90,900 mt in the previous month.

Meanwhile, in April this year, total steel consumption in the region amounted to 5.91 million mt, up by 4.5 percent month on month and down by 7.7 percent from the same month last year.

In the given month, Latin American steel exports declined by 25.5 percent month on month and by 20.1 percent year on year to 666,600 mt, while the region’s steel imports came to 2.24 million mt, down by 3.1 percent compared to previous month and up by 14.2 percent year on year.
