Apparent consumption of cold rolled coils (CRC) in Mexico increased 19.7 percent, year-over-year, to 413,000 metric tons (mt) in May, marking the second time that monthly consumption exceeds 400,000 mt in at least the last 29 months (since January 2022), according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero), reviewed by SteelOrbis.

It is the first time, at least since January 2022, that CRC is the most consumed finished steel product in Mexico.

Production increased 9.4 percent, year-over-year, to 257,000 mt. This broke the annualized drop in March and April.

In the accumulated January-May period, CRC consumption reached 2.02 million mt, 20.2 percent or 340,000 mt more compared to the same period in 2023. Production totaled 1.32 million mt, 5.6 percent more.

In international trade, imports totaled 752,000 mt, 48.3 percent or 245,000 mt more and exports decreased 30.9 percent or 24,000 mt to 55,000 mt.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, in Mexico the producers of CRC are AHMSA (paralyzed due to insolvency), Ternium, Galvasid and Tyasa.
