To combat inflation, the Mexican government issued a presidential decree to exempt import duties on certain plated and coated sheet metal used for the manufacturing of food and beverage containers.
Various inputs used in the “steel and laminated products, lids for containers, as well as cast iron, iron or steel containers, cans and jars,” among others, are temporarily exempt from import duties, the Ministry of Economy published in the Mexican government's official gazette (DOF).
This will be in effect until December 31, 2025, although in some particular cases it could be extended until March 31, 2026.
The products are classified under tariff codes 7210.70.02 and 7212.40.04, which are painted, varnished or plastic-coated steel sheets and under 7310.29.99 for barrels, iron or steel drums with a capacity of less than or equal to 300 liters.
