Moldova Steel Works extends stoppage due to energy issues

Moldova-based steel producer Moldova Steel Works has announced that it extended the suspension of operations at its plant until January 20.

On January 6, the company had announced that it would stop production between January 8 and 13 in order to reduce electricity consumption and requested that only essential workers check in at the plant. The rest of the workers, totaling over 2,000, are temporarily out of work.

Moldova has been in a state of emergency since December 16, 2024, due to Russian gas supplies being cut off amid growing geopolitical tensions in the area. Moldova’s Ministry of Energy is trying to minimize energy consumption of the private sectors to ensure household energy needs and avoid a humanitarian crisis in the country.
