Outokumpu’s Circle Green products support carbon emissions reduction

Tuesday, 10 December 2024 13:51:04 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Finland-based stainless steel producer Outokumpu has announced that its stainless steel product with a 93 percent lower carbon footprint under the brand Circle Green has helped more than 30 leading companies in Europe and Asia, including Klöckner and Thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe, to reduce carbon emissions by more than 50,000 mt. From the launch of the product in May 2022 up to December 2024, Circle Green has contributed to a total emissions reduction of 50,400 mt.

“The frontrunner companies have seen the business value of offering Circle Green to their customers through their solutions. Even though the journey is still in its early phase, the volumes have multiplied year by year. We are confident that the growth will continue, and we are currently working on extending our low-emission stainless steel portfolio to be available early next year,” stated Jörg Müller, head of sales for Stainless Europe at Outokumpu, adding, “Challenges still remain in scaling up green steel production, such as the high initial investment costs, the availability of renewable energy sources, and the sufficiency of recycled steel as raw material.”

The company stated that it anticipates that green steel demand will increase significantly within the next years, with increasing focus on sustainability, stricter environmental regulations, and growing interest in low-emission solutions in certain industry sectors due to climate targets.
