Primetals to supply new off-gas cleaning plants for Kardemir to improve air quality

Thursday, 17 May 2018 17:27:41 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

UK-based plantmaker Primetals Technologies has announced that it will supply two new Meros off-gas cleaning plants for Turkish integrated long steel producer Kardemir’s sinter plants No. 1 and No. 2, and that it will upgrade a previously ordered Meros plant at Kardemir’s sinter plant No. 3.

According to Primetals, the off-gas cleaning plants are able to reduce sulfur oxides (SOx) by than 90 percent as well as delivering extremely low dust emissions. Start-up of the new plants is expected by the end of the current year. With this investment, air quality in the valley of Karabük will be improved considerably.

In general, the Meros process involves several modules for injecting and finely distributing adsorption and desulfurizing agents, such as activated carbon and sodium bicarbonate, into the off-gas flow. This efficiently binds and removes heavy metals, harmful and hazardous organic components, as well as sulfur dioxide and other acidic gases.
