The value of production at steel complexes in Mexico totaled $516 million in September, 16.3 percent less, year-over-year, in real terms or adjusted to eliminate the effect of inflation. This is seven consecutive months of contraction (since March), according to statistics from the national statistics agency Inegi, analyzed by SteelOrbis.

In the sister industry, the value of primary slab production plummeted 71.1 percent, year-over-year, to $96 million. Despite the percentage contraction, this value is the highest in five months. The maximum value was in January 2022 with $433 million.

Thus, the sum of the value of production in the steel complexes and primary slabs represents the value of production of the Basic Iron and Steel Industry with $612 million, 35.5 percent less, year-over-year. The maximum value was in May 2022 with $1.45 billion.

In the period January-September, the value of production of the steel complexes was $4.88 billion, that of primary slabs $877 million and the Basic Iron and Steel Industry $5.75 billion, figures that registered reductions of 23.6 percent, 70.8 percent and 38.7 percent, in the same order, compared to the same period last year.
