Rebar consumption in Mexico up 7.5 percent in April

Apparent consumption of rebar in Mexico increased 7.5 percent, year-over-year, in April to 345,000 metric tons (mt), with this increase the 36 percent drop in March was exceeded, which was also a lower volume at 243,000 mt in the last 27 months, according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.

Following the same consumption trend, rebar production also increased. In April, the increase was 1.4 percent, year-over-year, to 352,000 mt.

In the accumulated January-April, consumption decreased 8.5 percent to 1.27 million mt. Production decreased 14.7 percent to 1.29 million mt and export remained unchanged at 46,000 mt.

Industry data shows that in 2023, the leader in production was ArcelorMittal with 18.9 percent, followed by Ternium with 18.5 percent, DeAcero with 16.8 percent, Simec with 11.8 percent, Grupo Acerero with 11.6 percent, Gerdau Corsa with 8.1 percent, Tyasa with 6.1 percent, Sucero with 5.7 percent, among other participants.

The construction industry, according to Canacero, is the largest consumer of steel in the country.
