The value of scrap metal exported from Mexico totaled $50.5 million, up 13.1 percent year-over-year in real terms (after adjusting for inflation for the period), according to a SteelOrbis analysis of data from the national statistics agency Inegi. One of the main exporters of scrap metal from Mexico is the scrap arm of the American steelmaker Steel Dynamics, OmniSource, which bought the Mexican Zimmer for $60 million in 2020 for its six scrap processing plants.
In contrast, the value of scrap metal imports to Mexico decreased 15.7 percent, year-over-year, in October to $84.6 million.
In the first 11 months of the year, the value of exports totaled $448 million, 12.1 percent or $48 million more than the January-October period of last year.
In contrast, the value of scrap metal imports to the Mexican market decreased 21.9 percent, year-over-year, in real terms to $824 million.
