Steel employment in Mexico decreased 1.2 percent in May

Formal employment in the steel industry in Mexico decreased 1.2 percent, year-over-year, in May to 141,357 workers. Although it stood out that the largest steel economy in the country by employment, Nuevo León, grew 2.3 percent and remains on a positive trend for 39 consecutive months, according to SteelOrbis analysis of official data.

In the national total, it is the fourth consecutive annual decline after 34 consecutive months of increase in job creation.

Despite the loss of jobs nationwide, Nuevo León stood out with the largest generation of new jobs. The state is the birthplace of the Italian-Argentinian steel giant Ternium, DeAcero also has its headquarters, ArcelorMittal has a production plant and in addition many steel processing companies are present.

Of the 32 states, employment increased in 10 with 1,754 new workers for a total of 47,505 workers, which represented 33.6 percent of the total. In 20 states, 3,491 jobs were destroyed, totaling 93,826 workers, a number that is equivalent to 66.4 percent of the total. In two states it remained unchanged.
