Sweden’s LKAB to secure clean energy from Statkraft’s wind project

Thursday, 12 December 2024 14:18:27 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Swedish iron ore producer LKAB has announced that it has signed an agreement with Norwegian state-owned energy company Statkraft for the supply of clean energy in the future from the latter’s planned Hästliden wind power project in Sweden.

Accordingly, 85 turbines with heights of up to 300 meters are planned to be built at the Hästliden wind park, subject to the approval of the Swedish government. Moreover, they are expected to generate 2.2 TWh of energy per year, which is equal to about 20 percent of current electricity consumption in electricity price area one. In Sweden, the electricity market is divided into four price areas to better regulate prices. The lifespan of the turbines will be 35 years. If approved, the park could be operational by 2029.

LKAB stated that it relies on energy companies such as Statkraft for its gradual transition, which requires new fossil-free electricity supplies.
