Thyssenkrupp to meet electrical steel demand from automotive industry

Monday, 27 January 2025 12:06:29 (GMT+3)   |   Istanbul

Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, a subsidiary of German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp, has announced that it has put its new high-tech annealing and isolating line into operation at its Bochum steel plant within the scope of its modernization works.

Entailing an investment of €150 million, the new line in question, which was supplied by German plantmaker SMS Group, will enable the company to annually produce more than 200,000 mt of non-grain-oriented electrical steel with thickness of 0.2 mm. These high-quality and extremely thin steels with a high silicon content improve energy efficiency, thereby increasing the range of electric vehicles. As a result, Thyssenkrupp aims to cater to demand for electrical steel from the automotive industry.

In the meantime, the annealing and isolation line will be complemented with new electrical steel inspection and finishing lines, allowing Thyssenkrupp to offer custom-made and cut finished sheets based on customers’ demand. The finishing line is scheduled for start-up in 2026.
