Turkey's scrap imports from Russia up 71.3% in January-August

In August this year, Turkey's steel scrap import volume decreased by 10.95 percent month on month to 1.55 million metric tons, up 5.32 percent year on year, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of this import volume totaled $579.68 million, down 11.25 percent month on month and increasing by 10.61 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the January-August period of this year Turkey's steel scrap import volume increased by 4.14 percent to 13.01 million mt, while the value of these imports totaled $4.92 billion, up 2.51 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In the first eight months, Turkey imported 2.61 million mt of steel scrap from the US, down 26.27 percent year on year, though the US still ranked first among Turkey's steel scrap import sources in the given period, ahead of Russia which supplied 2.01 million mt of steel scrap to Turkey, up 71.28 percent year on year. In August alone, Turkey's steel scrap imports from the US decreased by 29.52 percent year on year to 260,066 mt, while Russia ranked first among Turkey's steel scrap import sources in the given month, exporting 278,241 mt of scrap to Turkey.
