A working group under the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has announced that it has successfully produced fusion-grade steel on an industrial scale using an electric arc furnace (EAF).
Accordingly, the group used a seven-ton EAF to produce 5.5 mt of fusion-grade reduced-activation ferritic-martensitic (RAFM) steel that can be used in nuclear fusion reactors. The steel in question is able to withstand extreme conditions such as temperatures up to 650 degrees Celsius and intense radiation.
The project aims to significantly reduce production costs of high-strength structural steels and improve the efficiency of fusion power plants in the future.
