US slabs imports down 35.5 percent in June from May

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of slabs totaled 319,001 mt in June this year, down 35.5 percent month on month and decreasing by 50.1 percent from June last year. By value, the slab imports totaled $214 million in June this year, compared to $339.3 million in May and $532.2 million in June 2023.

The US imported the most slab from Brazil in June, with 226,957 mt, compared to 366,904 mt in May and 321,992 mt in June 2023. Other top sources of imported slabs in June included Mexico, with 46,700 mt; Canada, with 38,470 mt; and Japan, with 6,874 mt.
