Two new contracts for the supply of capital goods by Usiminas Mecânica for important works in the oil sector have commenced, according to the company. Both projects are for Petrobras' exploration of energy resources under the pre-salt layer.

Brazil's Usinas Siderúrgicas de Minas Gerais (Usiminas) said that equipment assembled by Usiminas Mecânica will be part of four FPSO--Floating Production Storage and Offloading-- platforms. This type of platform operates within a docked ship for oil exploration offshore, with a capacity to store 180,000 barrels of extracted product daily.

In the contract with Brasfels in Angra dos Reis (RJ), platforms P-66 and P-69 will use 700 tons of steel. Four bases of cranes and other structures of the ship are being produced by Usiminas Mecânica. In total, 126 sets will be assembled.

As for the P-67 and P-70, there will be four crane bases. These devices add up to 2,600 tons of steel used in the contract with the consortium Integra.

Collectively, the two projects will us 3,300 thousand tons of Usiminas steel, with 200,000 hours of production, planned for October 2013 through August 2014. "These supplies are important because they are aligned with the strategic vision of the company, seeking new markets and consolidating Usiminas Mecânica as a major supplier in the offshore market," according to the sales manager of Usiminas Mecânica, Magnus Corradi Mello.
