World pig iron output stable in 2016

In December last year, world pig iron production amounted to 95.86 million mt, rising by 1.4 percent compared to November and rising by 3.1 percent compared to the same month of 2015, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, as announced by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
 
Meanwhile, in 2016, world pig iron production totaled 1.16 billion mt, remaining stable compared to 2015.
 
In December, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 74.85 million mt, up 4.1 percent, with 57.47 million mt produced by China, up four percent, 6.56 million mt produced by Japan, down 1.4 percent, and 5.56 million mt produced by India, increasing by 16.3 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same month, EU countries produced 7.36 million mt of pig iron, up 2.6 percent, while the CIS produced 6.8 million mt, up 2.6 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
