The leading Japanese EAF steel producer Tokyo Steel has announced a JPY 500/mt cut in its domestic scrap purchase prices. However, due to the appreciation of the Japanese yen, the producer’s purchase prices have increased on US dollar basis.
Despite the announcement, Tokyo Steel’s general range for H2 grade scrap has declined just on the lower end to JPY 49,000-52,000/mt ($319-339/mt) depending on the mill. Due to the appreciation of the Japanese yen over the past week, dollar-based prices have increased by $5/mt on the lower end and by $9/mt on the upper end.
Shindachi scrap prices of Tokyo Steel have also moved down on the lower end in the local currency to JPY 50,000-53,500/mt ($326-349/mt). As a result, the dollar-based prices have moved up by $6/mt on the lower end and by $10/mt on the upper end. All prices are delivered and effective as of today, July 24.
