ArcelorMittal Poland, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-headquartered global steel producer ArcelorMittal, has announced that it has commissioned hydrogen furnaces, built with an investment of PLN 52 million ($12.5 million), at its Krakow site.
Replacing old dome furnaces, the hydrogen furnaces enable the company to eliminate ammonia from the annealing process and shorten the duration of the process itself, lowering consumption of natural gas and electricity. This process reduces carbon emissions during annealing by 50 percent.
Meanwhile, the furnaces are not the only hydrogen project for the Krakow site. ArcelorMittal Poland will build a hydrogen production plant, with an investment over PLN 100 million ($24.1 million), at its Krakow site in cooperation with Poland-based energy company Linde Gaz Polska, as SteelOrbis previously reported.
