Chinese steel producer Baosteel has decided to undertake an extensive modernization project for its pickling line and tandem cold mill at its Baoshan plant in Shanghai, according to UK-based plantmaker Primetals Technologies. The modernization project which aims to future-proof the mill is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

The scope of the project includes the implementation of comprehensive electric and automation systems such as measuring equipment, digital assistant systems and motors developed by Primetals. A key component of the project is the installation of a Central Operation Cockpit (COC), which will provide a bird’s-eye view of the entire production line, supported by 63 live cameras.

Originally built in 1998 to produce tinplate, the mill will remain efficient and competitive as a result of the project.
