Chinese steelmaker HBIS Group has commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-based continuous casting line with direct reduction technology, according to local media reports.

The line has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million mt and is designed to produce green and low-carbon materials to be offered to the automotive industry. The new line will produce slabs with widths of 900-1,900 mm and thicknesses of 230-250 mm. Hydrogen used in the production process at the line will enable the company to reduce its overall carbon emissions and the carbon footprint of its products

The company plans to have a production capacity of 7.41 million mt of low-carbon products by 2026.
