According to the data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), global direct reduced iron (DRI) production in the 13 countries accounting for approximately 91.4 percent of total world DRI production in 2023 amounted to 8.89 million metric tons in December last year, decreasing by 18.8 percent month on month and by 16.1 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, world DRI output came to 143.63 million metric tons in 2024, increasing by 3.5 percent compared to 2023, including the 13 countries that made up 91.4 percent of total production with 125.57 million mt, up 3.7 percent year on year.
The worldsteel data show that India was the largest DRI producer among the countries surveyed in December last year, with its DRI output amounting to 4.86 million metric tons in the given month. India was followed by Egypt, Russia and Saudi Arabia in December, with outputs of 779,000 mt, 700,000 mt and 621,000 mt respectively.
