Russian steelmaker MMK Group has announced that it has commissioned its new coke battery No. 12, which was supplied by China-based Sinosteel Equipment & Engineering Co. Also, the company has begun production at the battery in question, which is its largest investment project in the last 10 years entailing an investment of about RUB 90 billion ($1.03 billion).

Having a dry coke production capacity of 2.5 million mt per year, the new battery is considered to be the most powerful in Russia, meeting half of MMK’s demand for the product in question.

During the construction works, the company upgraded technical equipment for the purification of coke oven gas from ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and benzene hydrocarbons. Moreover, with the help of cutting-edge technologies and environmental protection measures, MMK will cut its atmospheric gas emissions and carbon emissions from the battery by 11,500 mt and by 2.2 million mt per year, respectively. Additionally, the coke dry quenching system will prevent waste and will allow utilization of coke heat, generating an additional 40 MW of electricity.
