Growth potential of Turkish ferrous and non-ferrous industry squeezed by tough competition conditions

According to the data issued by the Mediterranean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association (ADMIB), the value of the Turkish ferrous and non-ferrous industry’s exports in November this year increased by nine percent to $1.1 billion, while the country’s steel exports totaled $1.3 billion, up by 8.5 percent, both year on year. The impact of these two industries, which have a total share of 10.5 percent in the country’s total exports, was insufficient to compensate for the 3.1 percent contraction in Turkey’s overall exports in November. Despite the increases seen in the two industries, tough competitive conditions and economic uncertainties in global markets continue to put pressure on the growth potential of the Turkish ferrous and non-ferrous industry.

Emphasizing that the current situation in the industry has not yet reached the desired level in the international arena, Fuat Tosyalı, ADMIB president, said, “We aim to move the Turkish iron and steel industry to a much stronger position in the global market,” while adding that the industry is still facing serious structural challenges.

Germany ranked first among the destinations for Turkey’s iron and steel exports in November with $175 million. Germany was followed by Italy with $148 million and Iraq with $113 million. Looking at the top 10 markets, Turkey’s iron and steel exports to Italy, Spain and Morocco increased by 69 percent, 62 percent and 51 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the given period, ferrous and non-ferrous metal exports from producers in Turkey’s Mediterranean region increased by 2.3 percent year on year to $68 million, while steel exports from the region reached $194 million, with a record increase of 50.8 percent year on year.
